Let’s talk GRATITUDE

Sitting in a wooden hut on a beach in Bali, with the soothing sound of waves and a breathtaking sea view, I begin my second blog.

While writing my first blog, I realized that this is actually a wonderful way to put my thoughts down on paper – thoughts that often keep spinning around in my head without finding resolution. By expressing and writing them out, I notice that space opens up for clarity – space for structure and space for answers to myself. So, I believe a word of gratitude to you, dear reader, is more than appropriate.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to read these musings of mine. Not knowing where they might lead, you embark on an adventure with me and my thoughts.

This time, I’d like to talk about gratitude. You might be thinking:
“Really, Lucia? So much has already been written about this! What could you possibly add that hasn’t already been said?”

Well, I hope to inspire you – with my story. To encourage you to consciously cultivate gratitude in your life and, in doing so, allow small yet meaningful changes to unfold. Miracles, both big and small. And honestly, who wouldn’t want that?

Gratitude: Your Ticket to Miracles

Five years ago, I stood trembling before the debt collector, faced with an estimated tax debt of €48,000. My head pounded with stress, and my heart raced in a rhythm that felt like a panicked SOS. Tears streamed down my cheeks as I tried – through sobs and stutters – to have a conversation with her. It was a living nightmare. I was convinced I would lose everything: my home, my sense of security, and perhaps even my place in the Netherlands for both my son and me. Those were weeks filled with sleepless nights and paralyzing existential fears. It felt as if I were standing on the edge of a cliff, ready to plummet into the abyss.

Fast forward to today: I’m spending a month traveling through Bali, currently sitting off-grid on top of a mountain, surrounded by jungle. Each day, the sun greets me warmly, wrapping me in her love. I am happy. I just turned 53, feel better in my skin than ever before, stand firmly in my power, and – most importantly – I love myself and my life.

How did I get here, compared to where I was five years ago? Through a lot of inner work and, yes, gratitude. A whole lot of gratitude.

Are you ready for a cheerful, scientific, and spiritual deep dive into the world of gratitude? Let’s go!

Gratitude: A Trendy Buzzword or Something Deeper?

For some, gratitude is a well-known value or tool, while for others, it may be a relatively new concept. Official definitions describe it as “feeling thankful” or “being appreciative.”

Gratitude is the sense of appreciation and recognition you experience when you receive something valuable, whether tangible or intangible. It’s a feeling born from the awareness that something good has happened to you – circumstances you perceive as positive. Gratitude shapes the way you experience life. Cultivating it is a skill you can develop, and it follows a simple life formula: More gratitude = more joy. So, it’s no surprise that gratitude is proudly regarded as the showpiece of positive psychology.

There are various forms of gratitude. You might feel grateful to someone for something they’ve done, or you might feel gratitude for a specific experience. Your gratitude can be directed toward people, situations, or life itself. It’s not just about acknowledging what you’ve received but also about valuing its importance.

Even time plays a role in gratitude. You can be grateful for something that happened in the past or for something you’re experiencing in the present moment. Then, there’s gratitude for the future. This could start with being thankful for life itself and for each new day. It could also extend to being thankful for a situation you hope to see change in the future – yes, expressing gratitude in advance for something that has yet to transform for the better. It’s like saying “thank you in advance,” signaling that you are open and ready to receive.

Five Years Ago: My Turning Point

Let’s rewind to my situation five years ago. Alongside taking the essential, practical steps to resolve my dire circumstances, I actively worked on addressing the underlying patterns that had contributed to them. I unraveled deeply rooted beliefs that perpetuated a mindset of scarcity and reprogrammed those limiting imprints.

I relied heavily on specific affirmations and prayers, repeating them in my mind day and night. I practiced being deeply grateful for the situation as if it were already resolved. I wrote it down as though the solution had already happened. How it would be done, I left entirely to the universe. But the belief that it would be resolved—that, I held onto with unwavering trust. Whenever doubts crept in—and trust me, they certainly did—I would read what I had written to refocus my energy in the right direction. And I continuously expressed gratitude, either aloud when possible or quietly to myself, no matter where I was.

It took a few months. The right help and guidance appeared at just the right time, and the right people crossed my path. Incredibly, four months later, the situation was completely resolved in a way I could never have imagined. The outcome was even better than I had dared to dream.

One extra beautiful result: my five years’ worth of overdue paperwork was completely sorted. Today, I have two amazing women—a bookkeeper and an accountant—who not only keep me on track but also take most of the workload off my shoulders. I feel immense gratitude for these two incredible women in my life. (You know who you are 😉.) Their support gives me space, freedom, and peace of mind.

Now, let’s dive deeper into the concept of gratitude and explore its effects on different levels.

Energetically: The Magnetic Power of Gratitude

According to the principle that energy follows attention, gratitude acts as an energetic mega-magnet. When you focus on what you already have, you send a signal to the universe: “I’m ready for more of this.”

Gratitude raises your vibration. It’s like an inner smile that others can’t ignore. People sense your positive energy and are naturally drawn to it. Simply put, gratitude makes you irresistible. Cultivating gratitude has a powerful energetic impact because it aligns with two key principles that are always at work:

  1. The law of energy follows attention – What you focus on expands.
  2. The law of magnetism – Like attracts like.

Energy Follows Attention – A Universal Law of Life

This principle states that wherever you direct your attention, your energy flows. In other words, what you focus on grows:

  • Focusing on abundance – When you consciously practice gratitude, you shift your attention to what’s already good in your life. This strengthens feelings of abundance and contentment. It amplifies the high vibration of your entire system, allowing you to attract more energy that resonates with these positive frequencies.
  • Amplifying positive vibrations – Gratitude raises your energetic frequency because it is a powerful emotion that lifts you out of lower vibrations like fear, worry, or scarcity.
  • Creating flow – By embracing gratitude, you harmonize your energy with both what you have and what you desire. This creates a sense of flow, where things seem to unfold more effortlessly, and opportunities naturally arise.

The Law of Magnetism

Also known as the law of attraction, this principle is simple: like attracts like, based on vibrational frequency. Your energy and vibration determine what you draw into your life:

  • Gratitude attracts more – By expressing gratitude for what you have, you send a clear and powerful message to the universe that you are open to receiving more of the same positive experiences. This enhances your ability to attract abundance, love, health, and success.
  • Creating resonance – Gratitude, much like love, operates at a high frequency. This means it draws in people, situations, and opportunities that vibrate at the same elevated level.
  • Overcoming scarcity thinking – Consciously practicing gratitude shifts your focus from what’s missing to what’s already here. This dissolves scarcity thinking (which vibrates at a lower frequency) and replaces it with a state of fulfillment. This shift becomes magnetic for abundance in all areas of life.

These two energetic laws are always in operation. Even though they are not as physically tangible as Newtonian laws like gravity, they function continuously – whether you are conscious of them or not. Not believing in them doesn’t negate their existence. Think of it like this: saying you don’t believe in gravity doesn’t suddenly make you float. These laws remain in effect, whether you acknowledge them or not.

Summary: The Energetic Benefits of Gratitude

  • Raises your vibration – Gratitude, alongside unconditional love, holds the highest energetic frequency. It lifts you out of negative energy and elevates your overall state of being.
  • Aligns you with your goals – Showing gratitude for what you desire as if you already have it aligns your energy with the outcome, accelerating the manifestation process.
  • Creates a positive feedback loop – Gratitude makes you feel good, which attracts more positive experiences, leading to even greater gratitude. This forms a continuous loop of joy, fulfillment, and satisfaction – and trust me, you want to be part of this cycle!
  • Strengthens your energy field – Gratitude radiates positive energy outward, making your energy field stronger and more magnetic.
  • Neutralizes negative energy – Practicing gratitude can dissolve energetic blockages and transform lower vibrational states.
  • Harmonizes with the collective field – Gratitude doesn’t just resonate within you – it also influences the collective consciousness. By cultivating gratitude, you contribute positive energy to the world’s energetic field.

Neurologically: Gratitude Under the Microscope of the Brain

Here’s where it gets scientifically fascinating. For this blog, I delved into the neurological effects of cultivating gratitude – and they’re nothing short of remarkable. Practicing gratitude not only boosts your mood but also positively influences your brain’s structure and function. Here’s a breakdown of what happens in your brain when you make gratitude a habit:

Activation of the Reward System

Gratitude activates brain regions associated with the reward system, such as the prefrontal cortex and the nucleus accumbens (yes, some technical terms for you). These areas are the same ones triggered by pleasurable experiences like eating chocolate or receiving a compliment. The result? A sense of satisfaction and happiness.

  • Dopamine Release: Say hello to dopamine! This “feel-good” neurotransmitter is boosted by gratitude, providing motivation and a rewarding sense of joy.
  • Oxytocin Production: Gratitude enhances social bonds by increasing oxytocin levels – known as the “cuddle hormone” = which fosters empathy and connection.
  • Serotonin Generation: Gratitude also promotes the release of serotonin, a neurotransmitter essential for feelings of happiness, well-being, and relaxation. Balanced serotonin levels help you feel more emotionally stable and joyful.

Reduction of Stress and Anxiety

Your amygdala – the “drama queen” of your brain – finally gets a break. Gratitude reduces the activity of the amygdala, the brain’s center for detecting threats and regulating stress and anxiety. This means gratitude can help you remain calmer, even in challenging situations.

  • Lower Cortisol Levels: Cortisol, the infamous stress hormone, decreases with gratitude practice, alleviating chronic stress and enhancing both physical and mental health.

Strengthening the Prefrontal Cortex

The prefrontal cortex, responsible for decision-making, self-regulation, and social behavior, becomes stronger and more developed through consistent gratitude practice.

  • Improved Emotional Regulation: Gratitude enables better management of negative emotions like frustration and anger.
  • Long-Term Thinking: It enhances your ability to think ahead and make choices aligned with positive future outcomes, helping you set and achieve meaningful goals.

Neuroplasticity: Rewiring Your Brain

Gratitude contributes to your brain’s neuroplasticity, meaning it can literally rewire itself. Regular gratitude practice strengthens neural pathways associated with positive emotions and thoughts.

  • Breaking Negative Patterns: Gratitude interrupts cycles of negative thinking and replaces them with healthier, more positive habits.
  • Boosting Flexibility and Optimism: Your brain becomes more adaptable, optimistic, and creative over time.
  • Instilling Optimism: As gratitude becomes a habit, it naturally fosters a more positive outlook on life.

Enhanced Mental Resilience

Gratitude increases your capacity to cope with adversity. People who regularly practice gratitude demonstrate greater emotional resilience and recover more quickly from stressful or traumatic events.

In Summary: Gratitude Gives Your Brain the Ultimate Workout

Practicing gratitude is like a gym session for your brain – no Sudoku puzzle can match it. It improves focus, enhances creativity, and helps break the endless cycle of stressful thoughts. Imagine your brain as a chaotic rabbit warren; gratitude serves as the gentle guide leading you to a sunny, open field. Each time you practice gratitude, you send a friendly “thank you” to your brain, and it responds with a joyful dance.

Backed by Science

A study published in Frontiers in Psychology revealed that practicing gratitude leads to lasting positive changes in brain activity. Participants who regularly practiced gratitude showed increased activity in brain areas linked to empathy, satisfaction, and happiness – effects that persisted weeks after the practice. Cultivating gratitude is not just beneficial for your mental health but also enhances your brain’s functionality. Think of it as a mental workout that strengthens your “happiness muscles,” without the need for a gym membership.

So, what are you grateful for today?

This wraps up the effects of gratitude on neurological and mental levels. But what else is there?

Physical: The Miracle Worker for Your Body

Did you know gratitude can transform your body into a zen temple? Okay, it won’t give you a six-pack, but it does work wonders in other ways:

  • Reduced Stress: Gratitude helps you unwind without booking a pricey yoga retreat.
  • Better Sleep: Say goodbye to restless nights. Gratitude calms your mind, letting you sleep like a baby.
  • Stronger Immune System: A happy brain boosts your body’s resilience.

Tip: Write down the small joys of your day each evening, like that perfectly timed cup of coffee. Small happiness is just big happiness in disguise.

Emotional: An Antidepressant Without Side Effects

Sometimes, your brain feels like a messy closet. Gratitude acts as the Marie Kondo of your mind, asking, “Does this thought spark joy?” If not, it’s time to let it go. The result? Less overthinking, more laughter, and the emotional resilience of a trampoline. Gratitude shifts your focus toward the good and beautiful aspects of life, like having an internal cheerleader reminding you of life’s blessings.

Spiritual: The Cosmic Power of Gratitude

Spiritually, gratitude feels like opening a window to a larger world. It’s as if you’ve logged onto the universe’s cosmic Wi-Fi. Gratitude acts as the key to unlock a gate behind which abundance and blessings are waiting to enrich your life. It reminds you that there’s more to life than what meets the eye and that everything is interconnected. Gratitude also brings inner peace. You no longer feel the need to chase “more” or “better” because you realize you already have so much.

How to Cultivate Gratitude

  • Write It Down: Keep a gratitude journal – it’s simple but incredibly effective.
  • Feel It Fully: Pause and truly savor those small, meaningful moments.
  • Share It: Express your gratitude to others. Gratitude is contagious in the best way. Imagine creating a “positive pandemic” simply by spreading it!

Conclusion: Your New Superpower

Gratitude is more than just a mood booster – it’s a transformative lifestyle. It’s a superpower that enhances your life on every level. Physically, it reduces stress, improves your immune system, and promotes better sleep. Emotionally, it fosters stability, mental clarity, and resilience. Neurologically, it rewires your brain to focus on positivity and joy. Spiritually, it connects you to something greater, reminding you of life’s abundance.

Perhaps most profoundly, gratitude shifts your perception. It shows you that life’s treasures aren’t in far-off plans or destinations (although Bali is treating me very well) but in the present moment. It’s in a delicious espresso, a stranger’s smile, or the peace of a deep breath. Gratitude teaches you that imperfection isn’t an end but an opportunity to grow. Gratitude makes you soft yet powerful, vulnerable yet unshakable. It reminds you that you are already whole – even when you forget how radiant you truly are. So, take a moment to close your eyes, breathe deeply, and smile. Smile at yourself, those around you, and life itself. You are not just surrounded by miracles; you are one.

Oh, by the way, my next blog will dive into a question that’s been on my mind for a while: “Am I spiritual because I’m conscious, or am I conscious because I’m spiritual?” Feels a bit like the chicken-and-egg dilemma, doesn’t it? I’ll be pondering this in the coming weeks. Curious? See you next time!
